Wabi Sabi Scarf E Booklet
“Wabi Sabi” means to embrace the imperfect, reminding us that beauty doesn’t come from polish and perfection, but from the irregularities and uniqueness of handmade art. In our weaving we often strive for perfection: the right colours, the right textures, the right tension, the right everything.
When you create a Wabi Sabi scarf, you will set aside “right” and “wrong”. You will learn how to use all the yarns, all the colours and all the textures to create a scarf that is uniquely yours. You will be encouraged to stray from the rules and embrace randomness and creativity.
And finally, when the scarf comes off the loom when the yarns and textures blend in ways that you could never fully anticipate, and the true magic is revealed, I hope you will be ready to make more scarves. (I bet you can’t just make one!)
This guide will walk you through my process. It is a step-by-step guide, not a pattern. These pages will give you a framework for creating your own Wabi Sabi scarf beginning with choosing the yarns right through to wet finishing. You’ll discover ways to choose colours, warp creatively and how to manage troublesome warps! But most of all, you will be encouraged to set aside the rules and try something unexpected!
You will need a loom of any size, your choice of reed (reed size will depend on yarn choices), a stash of yarn, lots of shuttles and a creative heart.
