Pick-up Sampler Cloths Rigid Heddle Weaving Pattern
Pick-up sticks are my favourite. They look complicated but really aren’t. Once you understand what they work, a whole world of possibilities opens up!
This pattern was designed to introduce you to using pick-up sticks through a series of six sampler cloths. Each cloth has a different pattern. Making small changes from cloth to cloth helps you to see exactly what is happening and why.
In this project you will explore:
weft floats
warp floats
waffle weave
combining multiple pick-up sticks
In the end, you will make 6 cloths. Cloths that are soft enough for faces and sturdy enough for dishes.
Makes
Six cloths, each approximately 10" × 12" finished
Who This Project Is For
This project is designed for rigid heddle weavers who are comfortable with plain weave and ready to begin exploring pick-up sticks.
If you’ve been curious about textured weaving, lace structures or using pick-up sticks but weren’t sure where to start, this pattern walks through each step.
What You Will Learn
how to insert and use pick-up sticks
the difference between warp and weft floats
how to use one and two pick-up sticks together
how small structure changes create very different fabrics
What You Will Need
Yarn
520m 8/2 cotton
300m textured cotton such as Caterpillar Cotton, Beam 3/2 or Monte Cristo
I used Ashford Yoga Cotton for the 8/2 cotton and Caterpillar Cotton for the textured weft. You can substitute other yarns, though your picks per inch may shift slightly.
Equipment
15" rigid heddle loom
10 dent reed
3 stick shuttles or boat shuttle with bobbins
2 extra warping sticks
Standard weaving tools (scissors, tape measure, darning needle, s-hooks, etc.)
