Learn to Weave Double Width! - Zoom May 9/16 AM
🗓 Date: May 9th and May 16th
⏰Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm ADT (Halifax)
📍 Location: Zoom
Double-Width Weaving (2-Part Zoom Class)
Learn how to weave double width on your rigid heddle loom using two heddles.
This class is designed as a next step for weavers who are ready to move beyond single heddle weaving and explore working in layers. You’ll learn how two heddles and pick-up sticks work together to create a double-width fabric, allowing you to weave a wider piece than your loom.
We’ll meet over two sessions to keep the process manageable and give you time to build confidence as you go.
Session 1: Focus on Threading
We’ll begin by walking through the structure of double-width weaving so you understand what’s happening on the loom. From there, we’ll start threading both heddles together and begin the setup process.
Between Sessions
You’ll complete threading and tie on your loom at home using the guidance from class. You’ll come to the second session ready to begin weaving. If you run into trouble, you’re welcome to contact me for help.
Session 2: Understanding & Weaving Double Width
In the second session, we’ll insert the pick-up sticks and work through the weaving sequence step by step. You’ll begin weaving in class while learning how the layers interact, how to manage the fold, and what to watch for as you continue at home.
We’ll also cover common mistakes, how to fix them, and what to expect during finishing so you feel confident completing your project.
Suitable for:
Weavers who are comfortable warping their loom and weaving plain weave, and are ready to explore more advanced techniques.
Materials
You will need yarn that produces good, clean sheds when used with two heddles. I recommend the following options, as I know they work well for this structure:
Malabrigo Rios
Maurice Brassard 8/4 Superwash Merino
Juniper Moon Pima Cotton
You’ll need approximately:
800m main colour
600m contrast colour
You are welcome to substitute yarns, but keep in mind that yarn choice matters for this project. Yarns that are too sticky, fuzzy, or grabby can make it difficult to achieve clean sheds when working with two heddles.
Equipment
24” Rigid heddle loom with two heddle capability (adjustments can be made for 20" looms)
Two 7.5 or 8 dent reeds
Two pick-up sticks (at least 26” in length)
Two shuttles
Extra warping sticks
S-hooks
Painter’s tape (helpful for labeling pick-up sticks and sequence)
Scissors
Tape measure
Threading hook
Any other tools you regularly use for weaving
