Galaxy Scarf
Any project I put on my loom starts with a question. This time, it was: what can I do with two cones of bamboo bouclé?
I love colour transitions and wanted to make a scarf that looks different on both sides and at both ends. As you wrap it around your neck, different sections come together, with the black and white creating a striking contrast. The gradual changes in both warp and weft take the scarf from black to white. It is all plain weave, so you can focus on the yarn and watch the colours change as you weave.
You do not need to use black and white. Any two strongly contrasting colours would work beautifully, and a subtler pairing would be lovely too. Try two shades of blue or pink, or light green with light pink.
Bamboo bouclé makes a soft scarf with a silky feel and lovely drape. It is a little more challenging to work with than smooth yarn, but the silky texture helps it tangle less than you might expect. If you have woven a couple of projects and are ready to try something different, this is a good beginner project. I would not recommend it as your very first weave, but you do not need lots of experience. I will walk you through working with the bouclé, managing colour changes, and improving a small shed.
Makes
One scarf approximately 68½″ long × 11½″ wide, plus a 6″ fringe at each end.
Who This Project Is For
A beginner rigid heddle weaver who has completed a couple of projects and is comfortable warping a loom and weaving plain weave. You will try a textured yarn and practise changing colours in both warp and weft, with tips for working with bamboo bouclé.
What You Will Learn
• Create colour transitions in the warp and weft
• Warp with doubled yarn and weave with a single strand
• Wind and weave with bamboo bouclé
• Manage tension with yarn that has little stretch
• Improve a small shed using a pick-up stick
• Hemstitch and finish the fringe
