Knit a Raglan Sweater Your Way!

Design Your Own Raglan Sweater

This is going to seem a little outside my normal weaving zone, but I was a knitter long before I was a weaver. And just like my weaving, I love designing my own knitting creations!

My favourite sweaters to knit are top-down raglan sweaters because they're incredibly versatile. You can keep them beautifully simple, or add your own personality with different necklines, textures, colours, or other details. Every sweater can be completely unique.

We'll be using a free top-down raglan pattern from Ravelry (I'd happily pay for it!), but I think of it more as a roadmap than a finished destination. I've used it to make lace cardigans, hooded pullovers, V-necks, crew necks, fitted sweaters, relaxed sweaters... the possibilities are almost endless. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure story in sweater form, and I love it.

Beginning Saturday, September 19, and continuing on September 26, October 17, and November 21, we'll meet in my home to design and knit your own sweater.

One of my favourite things about this approach is that you can use any yarn. Prefer a quick, cozy bulky sweater or a lightweight fingering-weight cardigan? We'll adapt the sweater to suit your yarn, your gauge, and your measurements.

The focus of this class is understanding sweater construction. We'll work through choosing yarn, knitting and measuring a gauge swatch, taking measurements, adapting the pattern, casting on, shaping, separating the sleeves, and finishing your sweater. Along the way, we'll talk about fixing common mistakes and making your sweater fit just the way you want.

If you'd like to keep your sweater simple in stockinette stitch, that's wonderful. If you're already comfortable with techniques such as cables, lace, or textured stitches, you're welcome to incorporate those into your sweater. While we won't be learning those stitch patterns in class, I'll help you adapt the sweater so you can include the techniques you already enjoy.

In addition to the Ravelry pattern, I'll have supplementary handouts, finished sweater samples, examples of different raglan increase methods, and plenty of ideas to help you make the sweater you want to wear.
