Bold Tea Towel Pattern
This pattern explores colour and weave using a classic houndstooth structure to create bold, graphic towels.
By alternating colours in both the warp and the weft, simple threading turns into striking patterns with strong contrast and visual movement. Small changes in how the colours are used can completely transform the final cloth, making this a fun and versatile project.
This pattern includes two towel variations:
A traditional houndstooth design
A second option that plays with the same threading in a different way
Both towels are woven on the same warp, giving you the opportunity to see how much variety can come from one set-up.
Makes
Two towels, each approximately 16 x 27”.
Who This Project Is For
This project is well suited for rigid heddle weavers who are comfortable with the basics and are ready to explore colour and weave.
If you’ve woven plain weave towels before and are looking to add more visual interest through colour interaction, this is a great next step.
The threading requires attention and counting, but the weaving itself is rhythmic and enjoyable once you get started.
What You Will Learn
How colour placement affects pattern in colour and weave
How to weave a classic houndstooth structure
How to manage multiple shuttles cleanly at the selvedges
How to weave two different designs from the same warp
What You Will Need
Yarn
8/2 cotton (doubled for warp and weft)
For best results, choose high-contrast colours to create the bold pattern this design is meant to highlight.
Equipment
20" rigid heddle loom
10 dent reed
3 shuttles (or boat shuttle with bobbins)
2 extra warping sticks
Standard weaving tools (scissors, tape measure, darning needle, s-hooks, etc.)
