I love colour and weave. There's something a little magical about creating pattern in plain weave simply by changing the order of the colours.
Houndstooth is a popular colour-and-weave pattern. Traditionally it's woven with two colours, but for Berry Punch I decided to add a third. The result is interesting – almost like a little optical illusion.
In keeping with my summer theme, I chose three shades of pink and purple – because summer berries! And, while it may look complicated, it's still plain weave! You'll have three shuttles to manage, but once you find your rhythm, the weaving is quite straightforward.
Berry Punch is woven with doubled cotton bouclé, in both the warp and the weft, creating thick, soft and absorbent towels that get fluffier every time they're washed.

Who This Project Is For
This project is suitable for rigid heddle weavers who are comfortable with basic warping and plain weave.
The structure itself is simple – the pattern is created entirely through the order of the colours in the warp and weft. Managing three shuttles can feel a little awkward at first, but you'll develop your own rhythm as you weave.
If you've never woven houndstooth before, this is a fun way to see what happens when we take the traditional two-colour pattern and change it up a little.

Mauve Foncé
Rose Foncé
Rose Pale
The bouclé is used doubled in both the warp and weft.
Equipment
24" rigid heddle loom
10 dent reed
2 extra warping sticks
3 shuttles
All your usual weaving paraphernalia – warping sticks, darning needle, scissors, t-pins, s-hooks, tape measure, etc.
Patterns are just guidelines! This pattern is simple to adapt to a larger or smaller loom. And feel free to adapt the yarns…while I love the cotton bouclé, it would weave well with regular 8/2 cotton or Cotolin (be aware that the ppi will be higher). Try it in Bamboo cotton for a smooth summer wrap (add a little extra length to the warp). Or for a silky textured scarf, try Bamboo bouclé.
